2026 Census – Occupation guidance for game developers
On Tuesday 11 August, Australians will complete the 2026 Census. Recent updates to the occupation classifications means that game development related jobs have the opportunity to be better reflected in the Census data.
This is a chance to make your profession count and for government and policy makers to recognise the work and size of the video games industry in Australia.
The Census will ask you to fill out the information based on the main job you held in the week before you receive the census. This information will help the ABS code your occupation and help reflect the size of our sector.
The questions will be:
- Your occupation title
- The main tasks you perform in that occupation
- The business name you work for
- The industry of business you work in
- The main goods or services provided by the business you work for
For your occupation title, we recommend you say: Digital Games Developer
The subsequent questions allow you to provide more detail in relation to the tasks related to your occupation whether it be engineering, audio, art, production etc.
Accurate data is vital for all of IGEA’s advocacy, and this is your chance to contribute directly.
We thank the Design Institute of Australia for highlighting this opportunity for us via their write DESIGNER campaign to ensure all designers are heard and counted! There are hundreds of thousands of designers working across many different sectors. Designers are contributing significantly to Australian culture and the economy and deserve recognition for the important work they do across society.
We encourage you to take a look at their campaign and share it across your own networks. The full details can be found here
